Feeding your Soul

Last weekend welcomed a new moon and a sweet blissful Valentines day full selfless displays of love. Yesterday (February 16), almost in an instant, contrast appeared in the form of soft snow crystals across the country. Places that rarely ever see flurries were flooded with overwhelming amounts of snow. Chicago received over twelve inches for the 3rd or 4th time in one winter and I woke up to slow steady drips of murky brown water falling from the kitchen ceiling.

If you’re into astrology you may know Mercury has been in retrograde since January 29th. Is it just me or has everyone seen the effects of retrograde “hit different” this time around? Emotions are running amuck, mother nature has released her icy wrath, Gorrilla Glue girl…. need I say more? Everyone handles hardships differently. For myself in particular, self-care or self-sulking are the habitual reactions to trauma, drama, and stresses of life. After seeing the water leak and receiving some resistance from my HOA on resolving the issue, tears began to shed in an instant.

Lucky for me, a very dear friend was there to prevent me from going into a full blown panic attack. Had he not been there, random fits of self pity would have ensued, as well as a day of retreating to my bedroom or couch to let out sighs of anxiety with nothing but toxic social media scrolling in between moments. Having faced constant death, political drama, civil unrest, and a national pandemic in 2020, I had become prone to shutting down in these ways. This is no way to live life trust me! Happily in 2021 I say it’s a new dawn, it’s a new day, and nothings is going to shut me down!

So after being reminded to pray and trust in divine spirit, I proceeded to do what I could. The first order of business being to sit down and actually pray/meditate, followed by cooking a lovely kale, carrot, and tomato soup (courtesy of hello fresh), lastly reading before bed and putting extra effort into my night-time skin care routine. I slept like a Queen and woke up at 4am to lovely thoughts. Upon waking up a full 2 hours before my alarm I partook in some mindless facebook scrolling and landed on a Hip Opening yoga zoom class set to start at 8am. It felt like it called to me, so I followed.

One thing I will always stick by, is that Yoga is one of the best ways to start the day. Immediately after the 8am class my capacity to handle all the situations life had thrown before me went from zero to full throttle. A night of feeding mind, body, and soul was necessary to lead me to this new found readiness.
